한반도의 평화와 발전에 대한 기대는 물론 세계적 관심을 모았던 북미정상회담이 美 트럼프 대통령의 김정은 국무위원장에게 보내는 공개서한을 보내며 취소돼 무산됐다.
북한 풍계리 도널드 트럼프 대통령은 24일(현지시간) 김정은 북한 국무위원장에게 보내는 공개서한 형태로 6월 12일 싱가포르에서 개최할 예정이었던 북미정상회담을 취소한다고 밝혔다.
트럼프 대통령은 이날 김 위원장 앞으로 쓴 공개서한을 통해 "나는 김 위원장과의 대화를 고대했으나 슬프게도 북한의 최근 성명에서 나타난 엄청난 분노와 공개적인 적대감에 근거할 때 지금 시점에 오랫동안 준비했던 북미 정상회담을 개최하는 것은 부적절하다고 느낀다"며 이같이 밝혔다.
그러면서 "만약 김 위원장이 마음을 바꿔 북미 정상회담을 열고 싶어진다면 전화하거나 서한을 보내주길 바란다"며 여전히 북한과의 대화 가능성은 열어두고 있음을 시사했다.

우리는 오는 6월12일 양측에 의해 오랫동안 기대를 모아온 싱가포르에서의 북미 정상회담에 당신이 쏟은 시간과 인내, 노력을 매우 감사하게 생각한다. 이번 만남은 북한의 요청에 따른 것이었으나 이제는 완전 무관하게 됐다. 나는 그곳에서 당신과 만나기를 매우 고대하고 있었다.
슬프게도 당신들이 최근 성명에서 보여준 엄청난 분노와 적개심에 근거할 때 나는 지금 시점에 오랫동안 준비해온 이번 정상회담을 개최하는 것은 부적절하다고 느낀다. 이 편지가 정상회담이 열리지 않는 다는 것을 나타내게 해달라.
이는 우리 둘에겐 좋을지 몰라도 전 세계로 봐선 손해다. 당신은 당신들의 핵 능력에 대해서 이야기하지만 우리의 것은 신에게 이 무기들을 쓰는 일이 없도록 해달라고 기도해야 할 정도로 거대하고 강력하다.
나는 당신과 나 사이에 훌륭한 대화가 싹트고 있었다고 느꼈으나 궁극적으로 중요한 것은 오직 대화뿐이게 돼버렸다. 언젠가 당신을 보게 되기를 고대한다. 한편 인질들을 석방해줘 그들이 가족들과 함께 있게 해준 것에는 감사한다. 그건 아름다운 행동이었고 매우 고마운 일이다.
정상회담과 관련해 당신이 마음을 바꿔 이 중요한 회담을 열고 싶어진다면 망설이지 말고 전화를 하거나 편지를 써라. 세계, 특히 북한은 평화를 이어가고 엄청난 번영과 부를 이룰 큰 기회를 잃은 것이다. 이 기회를 놓친 것은 역사적으로 봤을 때 참 슬픈 순간이다.

Dear Mr. Chairman:
We greatly appreciate your time, patience, and effort with respect to our recent negotiations and discussions relative to a summit long sought by both parties, which was scheduled to take place on June 12 in Singapore. We were informed that the meeting was requested by North Korea, but that to us is totally irrelevant. I was very much looking forward to being there with you. Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting. Therefore, please let this letter serve to represent that the Singapore summit, for the good of both parties, but to the detriment of the world, will not take place. You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that i pray to God they will never have to be used.
I felt a wonderful dialogue was building up between you and me, and ultimately it is only that dialogue that matters. Some day, I look very much forward to meeting you. In the meantime, I want to thank you for the release of the hostages who are now home with their families. That was a beautiful gesture and was very much appreciated.
If you change your mind having to do with this most important summit, please do not hesitate to call me or write. The world, and North Korea in particular, has lost a great opportunity for lasting peace and great prosperity and wealth. This missed opportunity is a truly sad moment in history.
